Responsibility

Kainuun Luontoretket is part of Visit Finland’s Responsible Tourism Pathway.

The company received the STF label on April 14, 2022.

The company received eceat certification on January 28, 2022.

The company is committed to the principles of sustainable development in its operations.

The principles of the circular economy have been a key guiding force in the design and construction of our buildings.

The power grid does not reach the shore of Lake Joukojärvi. A solar power system generates electricity for daily needs; during the winter and in the darkest times of the year, we charge the batteries using a generator. We guide customers on how to conserve electricity. The batteries for the electric-assist fat bikes available for rent are charged using off-grid electricity. We are procuring replacement batteries for the bikes to achieve our goal. To transport the bikes to the other side of the lake, the Sininen Saavutus route uses a ferry powered by an electric outboard motor, and the battery is charged with solar energy.

Safety is a priority in everything we do. We provide guidance on how to use the rental equipment and offer customers tips for their trips, taking into account skill levels and the most challenging parts of the terrain and waterways.

For meals, we prioritize local foods such as fish and mushrooms. Our selection also includes organic foods. For outdoor dining, we use our own aspen plates as disposable tableware

We use well and lake water for domestic use. The water is brought in but drained into a soakaway via sewers.

We compost household waste in a rapid composter. The outdoor toilets are composting toilets. We use the composted material to fertilize the forest, as well as the cooled ashes.

Starting in early 2024, fatbike rentals will include a 30-minute mountain biking technique lesson. The first mountain bike instructor course offered by the Finnish Cycling Instructors Association provided a solid foundation for teaching. The instruction provided with rentals takes the rider’s skill level into account and aims to lay the groundwork for a smoother and safer mountain bike ride.

In 2023, we launched a fishing development project. We applied for and received funding from Kainuu Leader to purchase equipment. We developed our skills through a fishing guide course at Lappia in Muonio.

In 2024, we renewed our Visit Finland SFT label and ECEAT certification.

In 2025, we burned a tar pit using traditional methods. The tar pit was burned near the old pit. The old tar pit was documented by the Kainuu Museum.

In 2026, we renewed the ECEAT certification, and the STF label is currently being updated.
